When Sinead O’Connor and Republic of Loose were approached to collaborate for the upcoming ‘Meteor Awards’ they decided ‘We People(who are darker than blue)’ was the obvious track to perform. The Curtis Mayfield song, which was recorded by Sinead for her recently released album ‘Theology’ is a searing diatribe against racism and ignorance. As timely in Ireland in 2008 as it was in Chicago in 1970, this heartfelt plea to embrace cultural diversity still rings true.
Everyone was so impressed with the outcome, they have now decided to release it as a single. Between them, they have completely reinvented the classic song. Sinead’s vocal interpretation is stunning and poignant, and is wrapped in the slick ROL production of catchy hooks, deft beats and a convincing rap from Republic of Loose frontman Mik Pyro. They employed the vocal talents of the Dublin-based, multi-cultural Discovery Gospel Choir and the results are quite beautiful.
‘We People…’ will be released on Sunday 10th of February, exclusively through iTunes; and then through all download platforms form the 17th of Feb. It will also be streamed on the Hotpress website from tomorrow, www.hotpress.com
You can catch the 1st exclusive live performance at ‘The Irish Meteor Awards’ on RTE 2 on Saturday 16th of Feb at 9pm
